ANT 3616 - Consuming Culture: The Anthropology of Food.


(3-0-3) On Demand. This course explores anthropological approaches to the understanding of food as culture, and eating as a social act. Topics include food in the context of human evolution; the variety of human diets around the world; food and ritual, including feasting, fasting, and food taboos; the relationship of culture to the cultivation of taste; the social and symbolic values of cooking and hospitality; food in the global political economy; and issues of food insecurity and food justice, both global and local. Additionally, this course contains a service learning component, in the form of a class activity related to sustainability or food insecurity on our campus or in the surrounding community.
