Exercise Physiology


Program Mission: This graduate program offered by the Department of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation provides advanced course work and training in the area of exercise physiology. The course of study in exercise physiology prepares students for employment in clinical settings (e.g. cardiac rehabilitation), corporate fitness, YMCA, YWCA, strength and conditioning training, and the commercial fitness industry. The program aids students in preparation for the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), and other professional certifications.

Admission Requirements: To be eligible for degree candidacy, applicants must meet all of the requirements for admission to the Graduate School (see “Admission to Graduate Degree and Certificate Programs”).  Additional requirements include an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 with a Kinesiology or related field focus, three letters of recommendation, a resume, and a statement of purpose.

KSR 4340, KSR 4440, and KSR 4450 or equivalents are required.

Degree Audit: The graduate plan of study is the EIU Degree Audit, which is generated automatically at the time of degree or certificate candidacy. Modifications of the standard EIU Degree Audit are submitted by the graduate coordinator to the certification officer in the Graduate School at the time modifications are approved. The Degree Audit serves as an unofficial summary of requirements for the program. Degree and certificate candidates are advised to review the comprehensive summary of the Degree Audit process specified on the “Requirements for All Degree and Certificate Candidates” section of the Graduate Catalog. Individual programs may require candidates to submit plans of study in addition to the Degree Audit, candidates should consult with the program coordinator.

Accelerated Program


Admission to the accelerated graduate program in Exercise Physiology requires that students have a minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.25 and the completion of at least 15 credit hours of required KSR courses in the undergraduate exercise science major. Applicants must have completed a minimum of 60 hours of  undergraduate course credit. All applicants must submit a resume and statement of purpose. All enrolled students must meet with the Exercise Physiology graduate coordinator in addition to their undergraduate academic advisor
to select courses.
