Our students report breaking news, investigate corruption, design award-winning publications, produce newscasts, cover professional sports, promote college athletics, and frame major events with their lenses. Our alumni win Pulitzer Prizes, Emmy Awards and earn all kinds of other recognitions for their journalistic efforts. In our program, students learn to think critically, produce creatively, write precisely, process information quickly, interview thoughtfully, manage people, and develop an excellent work ethic.
A minimum grade of C is required for all Journalism courses. A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required for all Journalism coursework.

Journalism Option
Semester hours required for the BA in Journalism: Journalism Option: 60
The Journalism option teaches the principles and techniques of reporting, writing, producing, and disseminating news in a range of forms, formats, and platforms. Students learn, apply and practice traditional journalism techniques such as researching and interviewing to find, evaluate, interpret, and report on public issues. They learn how to use data, documents, and public records to develop objective news stories in accepted journalistic style. This option is for those who prefer a broader, more general approach to learning about journalism.
Division of Journalism Core: 36 hours
Liberal Arts Required Coursework: 9 hours
Journalism Option Electives: 15 hours
Journalism students may select any JOU prefix course as an elective, except JOU 1000G.
Broadcast Journalism Option
Semester hours required for the BA in Journalism: Broadcast Journalism Option: 60
Broadcast journalists produce stories disseminated in traditional radio and television media spaces, as well as in emerging digital media platforms, while adhering to accepted journalism standards and practices. The Broadcast Journalism options teaches students how to use audio and video equipment to broadcast news, and how to communicate across platforms to disseminate their stories. Students learn, apply and practice traditional journalism techniques such as researching, interviewing, reporting, writing and editing. Students in this option also learn to find, evaluate, interpret and report on public issues, data, documents and public records in order to gather, organize, and evaluate information used to develop objective news stories in accepted journalistic style.

Public Affairs Reporting Option
Semester hours required for the BA in Journalism: Public Affairs Reporting Option: 60
Public Affairs Reporting is the study and practice of reporting local and state news, including activities of the state legislature, local government, courts and the impact of national and international events on local affairs. Students learn how to find, interpret and use public records to document government actions, such as new legislation or abuses of power, and to investigate significant social change related to these actions. This option helps students understand the theoretical and practical underpinnings related to public affairs through work in multiple Political Science courses; and, further, to apply this knowledge to cover local, state, and national governments, courts, and other public affairs issues with extensive context, expertise and sources. Students study organizations and individuals who operate in what is considered the public interest. This program is also useful for those interested in public service, civic engagement, political and government careers, public communications or non-profit service.

Public Affairs Reporting students need to complete 3 semester hours of JOU and 3 semester hours of PLS elective coursework. Students may select any JOU or PLS prefix course as an elective, except JOU 1000G.
Sports Media Relations Option
Semester hours required for the BA in Journalism: Sports Media Relations Option: 60
This option provides insights into the roles and duties performed by sports media professionals. Students take courses enabling them to examine and practice skills related to the fundamentals of sports media relations, including working with the media, athletes and coaches, managing crisis situations, recording statistics, writing game reports, marketing teams, organizing press conferences, and managing game events.
