JOU 4420(4102 & 4771) - Communication Law & Ethics

(3-0-3) S. This course provides foundational knowledge in ethical and legal principles relating to journalism and communication. Ethical principles - both philosophical and practical - relating to reporting, writing, editing, creating, and disseminating contents across diverse platforms are examined. As the course outlines the history and development of media law in the United states, major emphasis is placed on speech and press theories, libel, invasion of privacy, copyright, broadcast and advertising regulation, access to government records and meetings, access to court proceedings, and legal rights and limitations of new media. Credit will not be granted for JOU 4420 if student has already completed JOU 4102 or JOU 4771. WI
