Program Mission: The Master of Arts in Art is an intensive academic year program designed to mature a graduate student’s development in the areas of 2-D and/or 3-D fine art.  The program provides faculty guidance towards the completion of a thesis exhibition, and preparation of a professional portfolio of artwork. In support of these goals, the program offers competitive graduate assistantship awards, individual and group critiques, interactions with visiting artists, as well as visits to gallery and museum exhibitions.

Accreditation: The Art Department of Eastern Illinois University is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

Admission Requirements: To be eligible for degree candidacy for the degree program and option, applicants must meet all of the requirements for admission to the Graduate School (see “Admission to Graduate Degree and Certificate Programs”).

  • Candidates for the Master of Arts in Art in one of the studio art concentrations must submit 20 slides or equivalent digital media presentations of work, three letters of recommendation, and proof of a Bachelor’s Degree in Art. All students specializing in the studio art concentrations must present their portfolio to the department for examination by the yearly application deadline, and be assigned an official advisor prior to the completion of 12 semester hours of graduate credit.

Degree Audit: The graduate plan of study is the EIU Degree Audit, which is generated automatically in the Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS) at the time of degree or certificate candidacy. Modifications of the standard EIU Degree Audit are submitted by the graduate coordinator to the certification officer in the Graduate School at the time modifications are approved. The Degree Audit serves as an unofficial summary of requirements for the program. Degree and certificate candidates are advised to review the comprehensive summary of the Degree Audit process specified on the “Requirements for All Degree and Certificate Candidates” section of the Graduate Catalog. Individual programs may require candidates to submit plans of study in addition to the Degree Audit, candidates should consult with the program coordinator.

Degree Requirements

Degree requirements for all candidates include those outlined for the master’s degree by the Graduate School (see “Requirements for the Master’s Degree”).

Candidates for the Master of Arts in Art in one of the studio art concentrations will complete the Thesis Exhibition (32 semester hours).

Candidates must participate in the annual spring Graduate Art Exhibition, submit an approved artist’s statement one week prior to this exhibition, and pass an oral defense covering the formal, technical and conceptual aspects of the artwork exhibited. Before the end of the spring semester, candidates must submit to the Art Department a current curriculum vitae and a digital portfolio consisting of twenty representative examples of artwork completed while at Eastern Illinois University.

Graduate Assistantships

Information on graduate assistantships may be obtained by contacting the Coordinator of Graduate Studies or Chair of Art Department, EIU.

Summer Sculpture Residency Program

The Summer Sculpture Residency Program is designed to offer graduate level sculpture students the opportunity to design, construct and display a large scale sculpture. The goal of the program is to give currently enrolled graduate students in sculpture the opportunity to gain professional experience without the usual demand for an extensive portfolio. This program offers a stipend for materials, funds for living expenses, complimentary housing during the residency, 24 hour access to the new sculpture studio in the Doudna Fine Arts Center and the option of earning graduate academic credit.
Graduate School Course Credit: Students selected for the Summer Sculpture Residency Program and who are seeking academic course credit for the experience are advised to consult with the Residency Director immediately upon notification of acceptance. The consultation will provide information regarding the student’s eligibility for course credit since admission to EIU’s Graduate School is required. While the university application fee is waived for this category of enrollment, applicants must provide an official transcript showing the completion of at least 30 graduate credits from an accredited graduate program in sculpture. Admission to the Graduate School does not constitute admission to the Summer Sculpture Residency Program.
